German Shepherds - Puppies - Cost of Popularity

Rapid popularity of the German Shepherd has meant that at times many undesirable breeders surfaced with the only purpose of making money. In this situation, mediocre dogs are bred from an almost factory style, thus perpetuating faults. The massive numbers of dogs meant that sooner or later disaster would happen.

Serious German Shepherd breeders have maintained the breed, although there were some setbacks. Backs may be getting too long, angulations too steep, ear and tail carriage faulty, dentition lacking, movement poor, and other aspects appearing to illustrate that we must be continually on guard lest the breed degenerate. In Germany, the SV has, since its inception, controlled very tightly the affairs of the breed. It has maintained complete records of all dogs and has made periodic surveys with recommendations to all owners. In the USA, the Register of Merit (R.O.M.) is an attempt to ensure that only the better dogs are used in breeding programs.

German Shepherds - Puppies - History

The early German Shepherd Dogs were of several types. The build, the coat color, the coat length and the texture varied. However, high intelligence and ability to do specialized work united all varieties. In 1889, Captain Max von Stephanitz started the standartization of the breed. He envisioned a dog of a medium size, which could cope with sheep. In the early 1900s, first German shepherds were imported to the US. After the First World War the popularity of the breed grew immensely. German Shepherds proved to be intelligent, hard working and extremely courageous.
