Purchasing German Shepherds from a responsible breeder does not usually end up costing any more than buying a poor quality dog from a pet store or an unknowledgeable person. You'll end up paying in vet bills and heartache. A good breeder cares about their puppies and where they are placed. Don't be surprised if the breeder asks questions about you, your home, and your plans for care of the German Shepherd so they can decide if they want to place a puppy with your family.

Responsible breeders are concerned with the positive development of the German Shepherd. They work on breeding healthier dogs with consideration to the temperament. Once you select a breeder, screen them. Ask to see at least one of the parents (the dam or the sire) of your puppy. See how the dogs interact with the breeder. Is the puppy friendly and outgoing or does it shy away? The German Shepherd is a slow maturing breed. To help this dog develop into a well-behaved adult, the new owner must be prepared to provide kind but firm discipline and a secure environment. German Shepherds are very active and need regular exercise, especially while growing. An active owner, another dog or two, a fenced yard or dog run, can provide this. Putting German Shepherds on a chain outside will create frustration, boredom, and potentially dangerous dogs.
